Q:Do employers in banking sector recruit graduates of finance management or accounting only?
A:Generally speaking a finance management or accounting qualification is highly relevant for banking sector employers as it will provide a strong foundation to work in a number of different departments. However client facing or front office vacancies are the exception as these roles rarely requiring these qualifications. Commerce or marketing qualifications can be more relevant for such sales focused roles. A degree is almost essential in the Hong Kong market no matter what area of the bank you wish to work within. Where possible it is always best to tailor your qualification to the job you ultimately wish to obtain.
Q:I am studying in finance stream. How can I prepare for job interviews in finance industry?
A:Prepare firstly by researching the company and the industry. Make sure you clearly understand the role you are applying for. You should have a strong grasp of their structure and how you could fit into their business in order to best present yourself as someone who can add real value to that organisation. Know and be able to discuss what is in your Curriculum Vitae. Make sure you have relevant questions for the interviewer about the role. For example, you could ask what kind of clients will you be working with and if they are listed? It¡¦s important to make sure that you are getting exposure to listed companies. A common complaint from employers is candidates asking what their remuneration is going to be in the first interview so best to avoid this in your first interview and instead focus on what you can offer the organisation and how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role.
