The Filipino Core of Greatness
Post on 30-Jul-10by Pia Nazareno-Acevedo
August is the month to rekindle our appreciation for our country = Linggo ng Wika celebrations.
Are you ready to access your uniquely Filipino core of greatness?
If you are, then being open to your uniquely Filipino greatness entails you to be open to a variety of “exercises” that allow you to use your “muscles.”
Just like athletes who need to train their physical body constantly in order to achieve desired athletic results, we too have to become more aware of how our distinctly Filipino muscles of character, virtue and values are “exercised” in our daily life in order to achieve greater acceptance of who we are as a people.
The Warm Up
Let’s try to be more observant of uniquely Filipino values and traditions that make our family life and social life precious. Our basic awareness of our raw observations at home or with friends from moment to moment is a basic skill in developing an appreciation of Filipino culture. This ability can be measured and is tightly linked to our ability to celebrate traditions of our culture that set us apart from other countries.
Exercise
Make a list of such virtues, values and principles that make you proud to be Filipino. Who did you observe these values from and what situations elicited the said actions that currently give you pride.
For purposes of deeper appreciation of our culture: List down Filipino qualities that you know you admire in other people and that you wish you possessed. To enable you to run through these qualities more efficiently, answer the following:
Name of Person I Admire |
Quality |
Example of situation I witnessed this quality |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
EXAMPLE
Name of Person I Admire |
Quality |
Example of situation I witnessed this quality |
Cory Aquino |
Initiative |
Stepped up and fought for democracy versus dictatorship |
Tony Meloto |
Social involvement |
Reaching out and giving opportunities for more people to have a house of their own |
High School Teacher, |
Industriousness |
Commitment to teaching students difficult lessons outside of class hours |
Now, answer the following question:
What day of the week, in your interaction with whom (one person or a group of persons), can you find yourself practicing the said Filipino virtue, value or character trait?
EXAMPLE on weekly or monthly calendar:
You will note: Monday with my friend Marco = practice virtue of patience and understanding.
Work toward imbibing the Filipino values and virtues that you know you can be proud to have in your life. Continue to observe occasions for you to appreciate your culture by writing down on your calendar, preferably weekly for you to see at a glance how many virtues and values in a week and in the month were you able to practice and that you have set out to live by in your life. Accepting our strengths as a culture will lead us to a greater appreciation of ourselves as Filipinos. Let us continue to focus on the positive of who we are as a people and contribute what we can in the nurturing traditions and practices that we are truly proud to have.
