CAREER-DRIVEN
WOMEN
(THEIR ROLE IN THE CORPORATE WORLD)
By Teri Burgos-Gutierrez
“Language is power, in ways
more literal than most people think. When we speak,
we exercise the power to transform reality. Why
don’t more of us realize the connection
between language and power?”-- Julia Penelope
Our communication skills can be developed, improved,
and made more efficient as we move on with our
lives. It can lay the foundation for a continuing
training in any chosen field of endeavor we might
select or have an opportunity to take. No one
is too young or too old to keep acquiring new
skills in communication. As we move on to higher
learning and be members of international organizations,
we would find ourselves already oriented as to
what to expect. We would discover that we have
now developed a firm base for life’s meaning
and self-fulfillment. We would experience a considerable
pleasure in the relative ease with which we would
relate to others by means of oral communication.
Empowered Women
Women with an empowered
communication skill can be an excellent background
of training for any chosen career or profession
such as the areas of the academe, journalism,
legal management, the ministry, health, public
relations, advertising, management, information
technology, and human relations. All these as
well as other affiliations and advocacy, by their
nature, require communication skills. The ability
to control the factors of communicating ideas
and feeling will determine much of the success
achieved in any of these areas of personal commitment.
Women Leaders
Women today can acquire the
responsibility of being leaders and be able to
express themselves in strong, effective, interesting,
and meaningful language. They will choose not
to remain silent when they ought to speak. When
they do speak, they remain true to what they say.
If women are to succeed anywhere, it ought to
be in their skill to communicate. To speak well
is a matter of self-respect, an effort to make
the most of your self, and let the world know
what you are really like.
A woman
will become successful if she thinks success and
if she projects thought patterns of her aspirations
and dreams. It is one of the universal truths
that thoughts when relayed through communication
have the power to shape events, destinies, or
even history!
Wholistic Women
We women must empower our communication skills
and make sure that we have put things in their
proper perspective. Nothing ultimately is impossible
for us if our goals and standards are realistic.
Never allow ourselves to feel either inferior
or superior. We are well-rounded, goal-seeking,
and service-focused individuals who are in the
process of becoming what we want to become. Deeply
planted in our system is the knowledge of what
we want to be; this knowledge can brighten and
illuminate our life so that our entire body will
be full of light, vigor, and enthusiasm.
Global Women
We may be a leader
in a world ruled by men because we shall be guided
and sustained by a power greater than ourselves.
We will have no conflict within us because we
will create harmony within our “self”.
The good in us will prevail and it will be our
strength. We will be at peace with ourselves and
with those around us, we will be completely switched
on! With our goals well-planned, our vision well-designed,
our values intact, our programme activated, and
our relationships with family friends nurtured,
our life will be filled with joy and happiness.
That helps
us to lead lives of integrity, vision, courage,
community, productivity, satisfaction, and happiness
in every aspect of our lives, from the most intimate
to the most global where communication plays a
vital role. That must include our family life,
individual workplaces, and community affiliations.
This century’s global technological advancement
requires women who are skilled in communication,
comfortable within the self, and are able to work
and “relate” with “others”
in harmony. Let this be our ultimate goal; let
this be our vision; let this be our dream!
“If
you don’t like the way the world is, you
change it. You have an obligation to change it.
You just do it one step at a time.” Marian
Wright Edelman.
