REWARDING OTHERS AND YOURSELF

“If one advances confidently in the directions of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet success unimagined in common hours.” --Henry David Thoreau

Feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, stressed-out, worn down? Are you always on the run with never-ending things to do and no time left to enjoy yourself? Maybe you’re making hurried decisions in routine or wrestling with trivial concerns that feel more significantly pressing thatn those issues and events that are truly more important.

Making a difference in today’s workplace and leading a balanced lifestyle require
time and energy and one needs to be emotionally stable, mentally sound, and physically fit to have access to all our potential energy. Being indifferent is one of the biggest “putdowns” you can possibly give yourself. Nurturing and caring for your total being is one of the most fundamental ways in which you can convince yourself of your value as an important person in today’s workplace.

Our lives have meaning and we can positively inspire the world around us. A simple pat on the back, an engaging smile, and a great sense of humor can mean the world for a person. May the simple steps below invite you to lay aside excuses and reservations to begin changing your lifestyle – one moment and one person at a time. You may not be able to save all the fish in the ocean or inspire world leaders to live in peace but you can first make a difference in your own life and then the lives of those you see each day at work.

  1. Learn people’s names.
  2. Put people first.
  3. Give each person at work your full attention.
  4. Wish the best for others and find beauty in each of them.
  5. Remember to say “Thank You.”
  6. Expect the best from others.
  7. Return phone calls and keep in touch with friends.
  8. Tell people how you feel about them.
  9. Remember special occasions and keep a pack of greeting cards.
  10. Be on time.

You may also start rewarding yourself. Make a list of special yet simple treats for yourself. You may find this more difficult than it sounds. Start with small pleasures that you could work towards identifying the very special ones like:

  1. Acquiring a new book or CD
  2. Enjoying a meal out with friends
  3. Sipping freshly brewed coffee at your favorite coffee house
  4. Walking in the mall
  5. Watching a movie or listening to a song
  6. People-watching
  7. Spending an hour in the bath with a novel
  8. Visiting a friend
  9. Having a relaxing massage
  10. Hugging a favorite pillow

Persons who make a difference and value themselves appreciate their own uniqueness and individuality as a member of an enormous workplace. We all experience a sense of belonging and belief in our competence. That helps us to lead lives of integrity, vision, courage, commitment, productivity, satisfaction, and happiness in every aspect of our lives, from the most intimate to the most global. We need to design steps to provide opportunities for all of us to make solid contribution for good. Whether that contribution sweeps the universe or changes one moment of one life for the better, you will have a lasting memory of your life and that your life will have made a difference. That must include our family life, community affiliations, and our workplaces.

This century’s global technological advancement requires persons who make a difference in their llives, and are responsible individuals who are comfortable within themselves and are able to “relate” with “others” in the workplace in harmony. Let this be our goal; let this be our dream!
