Winning a million bucks in just one night maybe a stroke of luck for some but Sam Concepcion proved that victory is not all the time synonymous with luck and fortune, but with hard work, perseverance and support from the family.
Showbiz has been the home of the stage moms who keep on dictating the things they want without realizing the possible effects of this on their child. But in Sam’s case, he never experienced having a stage mother beside him; instead what he has is a mother whose support is immense, whose love is immeasurable, and whose faith will never be moved by doubt and fear.
From over a thousand who auditioned for the Little Big Star competition, Sam Concepcion stood out from the rest not just because of his singing prowess but also because of the unwavering support he’s been getting from his family and the firm foundation of faith instilled by them by their mom.
“Yun ang tinuturo ko sa mga anak ko, lahat ng katangian nag-uugat sa pagkamaka-Diyos, I think this is what the Philippines need,” says Mrs. Gene Concepcion.
For someone who is so young, Sam was able to sing the different genres very well –from Broadway to pop, and hip-hop to rock. He says he owes all of these from the inspiration he’s constantly getting from his fans and to God who can “easily take the talent away” from him.
“Lagi ko lang iniisip na God gave you the talent and God is using you to touch other people. Yun yung ginagawa ko sa showbiz, so other people may see yung pagiging napakagaling ni God na binigyan nya ko ng talent,” the 13-year-old singing champion says.
Their family’s foundation of faith is what distinguishes them from any other showbiz families. When asked their winning formula during the competition, his mother, without hesitation, replied, “God has been orchestrating things for us, I really want to believe that Sam was handpicked by Him.”
Sam’s family has also been a great inspiration for him to do the best in all the competitions he has entered.
“My family is very supportive. I was the one who wanted to do this and hindi sila umayaw,” he recounts the support he got during the heated contest.
Admittedly, not all other parents will do the same and will support their kid all the way.
Unlike other moms who discourage their child to follow their dreams, Sam’s mother has always encouraged him to excel not just in his career but also in his studies.
His mother’s advice to the other moms who want the best for their kids is to “go back to the basic, which is being Maka-Diyos.”
“Spirituality is the very basic factor for success. Spiritual in a sense that meron kang paniniwala that there is a Supreme Being at lahat ng magagandang katangian dun nagmumula sa pagiging maka-Diyos,” adds Mrs. Concepcion.
And as a parent, Mrs. Concepcion advises the young to be obedient to their parents, continue their passion and wait for the right time and the right opportunity to come.
“Habang nasa aruga pa rin ng magulang, ang nararapat lang sumunod sa magulang. Be good and be obedient lang, because darating din ang panahon mo, kapag nasunod mo na at napatunayan mo na sa magulang mo ang kaya mong gawin..”
