STARDOM IS HARD WORK!

These familiar faces show up on our TV screens, movie houses, and thousands of magazine covers. In the pantheon of modern-day gods, they’ve been idolized, immortalized, and become sources of inspiration to thousands of devoted fans.

But celebrity status did not come overnight. A life that sparkles with the glitz and glam was frequently earned by blood, sweat, and tears. Like the non-showbiz career people, the stars have paid their dues and keep on sharpening their skills. That’s how they can burn even brighter.

Once in a while, JobsDB.com will chat up-close and personal with these celebrities. Though not all of us have been bitten by the acting and concert bug, the values and lessons in their success story are pretty universal and can prove to be inspirational.

ANGEL JACOB: SUCCESS COMES FROM A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

One of the brightest faces in the local celebrity firmament is an angel. Angel Jacob, she with the glowing smile and sunny disposition, has gone through her own rocky roads but has emerged for the better. Always the positive thinker, Angel believes that all things happen for a purpose and that good things are balanced by the not-so-good ones so that we can appreciate the blessings of life. Model, mom, actress, TV host, celebrity, Angel is currently one of the hosts of ABS-CBN TV’s Perfect Moments, aired every Saturday at 11 a.m.. She shares her passion for the show and imparts some of her career success secrets.

How did you come to join Perfect Moments?

Well, I auditioned for Perfect Moments. ABS-CBN called me and they said they were coming up with a lifestyle show. And that’s what I want, a lifestyle show where I can do a lot of talking, give advice and fashion tips. I prayed for it and then I went to audition. I did feel good about it, and after a couple of days they called me and told me I’m one of the hosts… The program is not really work, it’s so much fun. We try to encourage women who are shy, who have doubts about themselves, to make them realize that everybody has insecurities, but acknowledging these iinsecurities is the beginning of overcoming them.

What would be a perfect moment in your career?

That would be when I did TV commercials for a clothing line and a beauty product. I was very proud of that. Every woman wants to be on TV and when they told me I was included, I felt that I did not have to be insecure anymore. It gave me confidence and this was the start of me acknowledging that I can do this.

How do you hone your craft as a TV talk show host?

I watch other TV hosts. I watch Oprah and learn from her… she listens to her guests and she doesn’t talk all the time, you can see she’s interested… she tries to think about it in her head, then she talks to them. And that’s how I want to be. I want to listen to you, I want to process the information in my head, and I want to give you sound advice, all at the same time. I think that’s the making of a good host.

What challenges do you encounter in your show?

When I go to the show, I make sure I know my work. We do have a script but I inject my own personality into it. So when you watch the show, you can see the hosts’ personalities. The challenge, I guess, is to just inject your own personality in the show, while continuing to learn from others.

Are there other things that you want to do besides the show?

I did several movies already, though they were all cameo roles only. I did soap operas, like Krystalla when I played a fairy. I still want to do shows like Perfect Moments. This is the perfect show for me -- a lifestyle show that encourages women. This is what I like, also understanding more about myself. I guess the challenge there is to continue being an encouragement to people that I hope I am, to do my work well, to update myself every time, to be conscious of how I affect other people’s lives.

What are your secrets of success?

Stay grounded. Be humble. In all of these, people see you. Everywhere you go, you are recognized and there is a tendency to be overwhelmed with all the attention. And people close to me, like my Mom, keep reminding me to stay grounded. You always have to remember that you must stay simple. You can be eaten up by fame and if it eats you up, you can get mayabang [arrogant] and be self-absorbed. And that’s what I don’t want. You must acknowledge your mistakes --- that’s what I mean by staying grounded. Appreciate people for things that they do. And you look back at the people that helped you and realize that you could not have done these things without them. Appreciate even those who reject you because you would not have been challenged without the rejection.

You just have to accept people and have a positive outlook in life. Even when things look bad, you have to take a balance. Things are not always good all the time. There has to be a break. You don’t know what you have until it’s not there any more. You have to be aware and be appreciative of the people around you. Also, love yourself first before you can love other people.

What career advice can you give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

Just follow your passion. If you want to be a model, then go to great lengths to do it. Then have a peg, or an idol and pattern your career path after him or her. More importantly, just go for it. Take that step, psyche yourself to do it. How else can you move if you don’t take the first step? Ask around. Find ways to do what you want to do. Also acknowledge that you will fail. You can get rejected several times, but you can move on. When people see your initiative, when they see you trying, that is valuable.
