Fit for Life

by Planet Infinity

BE FIT FOR LIFE!

Do you find yourself working more than nine hours a day?
Do you find yourself sleeping only five hours each day?
Do you find yourself having to skip meals just so you can finish your deadline?
Do you have the feeling that you never stop working?

If so, you are what James Loehr author of Stress for Success calls a “corporate athlete.” No athlete we ever studied in all of our twenty plus years in sports is anywhere near the demands of his or her time or energy than you do. In this sense, you’re more of an “athlete” than any athlete we’ve ever met. You’re expected to work for ten to twelve hours at a stretch while keeping your focus, making no mistakes and never fumbling.

And he goes on to say that we drive more energy than the busiest, most dedicated professional athletes. And while we know that it is true, we feel differently. Instead of having energy we feel tired. We say “I’m tired. Pagod na ako. I’m tired with work. I’m tired with life.” “There’s no profit. There’s no genuine reward.”

James Loehr said something very beautiful in the book How Many People Depend on You to Maintain Your Spirit. Stay in there and “fight”, approach the day with an unquestionable desire to succeed!

What are the consequences if you don’t survive and can’t handle the pressure and fold like an accordion? If you just throw up your hand and say “I’ve had it. I can’t take it in anymore.” You are not a professional athlete who can quit and enter real life. In real life the consequences are enormous and you know it. And because you know it you realize you keep on fighting.

Friends, we need the energy to continue fighting the pressures of life.
And EXERCISE simply gives us the energy that we need.

James Loehr quoted in his book The Power of Full Engagement, “Energy not time is the fundamental currency of high performance.”  Every one of our thoughts, emotions and behaviors has an energy consequence for better or for worse.

The ultimate measure of our lives is not how much time we spend on the planning but rather how much energy we invest in the time that we have. Performance, health and happiness are grounded in the skillful management of energy.

From the book Fit to Lead, a survey of executives from the top three thousand US companies revealed that two thirds of executives exercise at least three times weekly. More than ninety percent of that group using aerobic group exercise has a cornerstone of their workouts. Also, more than ninety percent reported being careful about their diet. Why are so many extremely busy and powerful executives place fitness at the top of their priority list? Because regular exercise and healthy eating not only improve their health, they also bolster their job performance and ultimately their careers.

For example: Michael Mango is President and CEO of the Mango Group, a diversified closely held business with interests in highway construction and equipment management. The company employs more than three hundred people and generates over eighty million dollars in annual revenues. Mango says, “I do believe fitness impacts my job. I usually exercise during the middle of the day. I find that my energy level is much enhanced when I return from a workout. Further, I find that because I choose to go during the day, my thoughts tend toward work while exercising. I have some of my most creative thoughts when working out.”

Judith Caplan had a similar perspective while she served as CEO of Action Products Intl., an educational toy manufacturer in Orlando that generates eight point two million dollars in sales each year. “I never felt better physically and mentally than when I was exercising regularly three times a week. I could work harder. Instead of collapsing at the end of the day I still feel good.”
